Crib Mattress Buying Tips
As a parent, much of your time is taken up by careful preparation for the arrival of the new baby. Everythingùfrom the nursery room down to the diaper supplyùis given precise attention. But since the baby will be sleeping 70 percent of the time, top priority is usually given to the babyÆs bedding, most especially to the crib mattress.
There are three things a parent should consider when buying a crib mattress: comfort, safety, and support. If these three are lacking in a crib mattress, you should skip that one out and look for something else. But the absence of these three is not always easy to figure out; sometimes you really have to be especially discerning. To help you, here are some tips in choosing a crib mattress.
1. Consider the firmness. Some parents think that a soft mattress will do well. This is a common misconception. Babies have the tendency to sink their faces into a soft mattress and may therefore get suffocated. Choose a firm mattress instead. It can provide better back support, carry the babyÆs weight more appropriately, and encourage better posture. Make sure, however, that the mattress is not too firm because it will be similarly uncomfortable.
2. Check the materials. This is particularly important because some crib mattresses are made from materials and chemicals that may compromise your babyÆs health and safety. To be on the safe side, try checking the organic crib mattresses that are apparently becoming the trend nowadays. You donÆt necessarily need to join the bandwagon, but it pays to consider. Organic crib mattress manufacturers take pride in using all-natural materials such as wool and cotton. They further say that not even chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides were used on these materials. Because of their natural element, organic crib mattress is said to promote air circulation within the mattress and can therefore help the baby breathe better. It is also less prone to allergens. Organic mattress, however, is more expensive than the traditional kinds.
3. Take a closer look at the cover. Better if you purchase the mattress with multi-layered cover since this proves to be more durable. Check also the seams and make sure that the edges are properly sealed.
4. Be extra careful of the size. The mattress should by all means fit the crib. Keep in mind that there should neither be folds along the mattress or a space between the mattress and the crib frame. Though unmatched crib and mattress is a rare case, it is better to be reminded.
As you shop for a crib mattress, you might be overwhelmed with the enormity of the choices. But donÆt fall too easy. Choose the one that promises the soundest and safest sleep for your baby.
