How to Take Care of Your Mattresses

Some people take their mattresses for granted and only clean it up when there is clearly a need to do so. However, it is actually more beneficial to your health and helps you to sleep better at night if you maintain the cleanliness and health of your mattress and care for it on a regular basis.

1) Don't let the bedbugs bite
A monthly vacuuming can suffice to keep those dusts and nasty bedbugs from biting away in the night. However, if you've gone a long time without cleaning your mattress, you might want to make a little more effort than just that. The only additional material you need is baking soda, which you can probably find in your kitchen cupboard right away.

Sprinkle baking soda thoroughly on your mattress, making sure to cover all spots. If there are areas that have slight stains, put more baking soda on them. After that, simply leave it lying there for several hours or even a day to let the soda do its work by absorbing odors, moisture and dirt. After a day has passed, pull out the trusty old vacuum cleaner and gather up all that baking soda, making sure to leave nothing behind so you don't end up inhaling all that powder instead. For a cleaner mattress, do this on both sides.

2) Clean the messes right away
It's nearly impossible to keep your mattresses totally clean and dry, especially when you have pets and kids in the house. Accidental spills, urine, blood and other liquids can make its way into your mattress and leave undesirable smells and stains if they're not taken care of right away.

Soak up as much of the fluids as you can with an absorbent cloth to avoid a bigger area of damage. Depending on the stain, use a liquid cleaner that is made especially to remove it. Blot out the excess moisture again, sprinkle baking soda on the area and let it sit for several hours to absorb the remaining moisture, and then vacuum away.

3) Cover it up
Mattress covers are great for protecting your mattress. Not only do they lessen the dust that settles on your mattress, some are also specially made to prevent mites and other bugs from getting in. And the best part? They are easily removable and washable so you get a cleaner bed without having to pull out the vacuum cleaner so often.

4) Turn the mattresses
After prolonged usage, your mattress will inevitably change to conform to your body's shape. Sometimes when this happens, it can no longer support your body as well as it could before. Aside from that, you end up wearing down only one side of your mattress. To promote an even wearing and tearing of your mattress, it's recommended that you turn and flip your mattress several times a year. When your mattress is still new, it would be best to turn it at least once every 3 months. After that, turning the mattress twice a year will do. To do this, flip your mattress so that the bottom part is now on top. Then, turn it around so that you swap the head and feet ends.

These simple tasks of taking care of your mattress not only keeps you from experiencing health issues and nights of tossing and turning, but it actually helps prolong the life span of your mattress. You'll sleep better knowing that your bed is clean and you don't have to worry about buying a new mattress every so often.
