Mattress Stains And Useless Panic Attacks

The first best thing to do is to ATTEND to it immediately. Unless there is another life-or-death situation that needs you, attending to the just-stained mattress is top priority.

If it is manageable enough, do the job yourself. If big enough, call a professional. The name of the game is attending to it right away.

Urine/Vomit/Sweat

For urine, blot out as much of it as possible with an absorbent cloth. Start from the outside and work your way into the center of the stain.

For vomits, clean out the solids first (if any) with a sponge or cloth, working from the outside going in, trying not to spread the stain.

Spray the area with distilled white vinegar and let set for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the damp area with baking soda. Leave on until the bubbling stops and the area dries up. You may leave it overnight. The next day, vacuum off the powder that had formed.

You may also use hydrogen peroxide instead of the vinegar. Do the same process as with the vinegar. (Hydrogen peroxide has a bleaching effect. Test out on a small, unseen area to make sure it does not damage the fabric.)

Another method is dampening the spot with water and sprinkling dry boric acid (borax). Blot dry with a sponge or cloth. Vacuum the area to remove residue.

Blood

Use hydrogen peroxide on the blood stain, making sure to blot out the wet parts first with a disposable towel or tissue.

Pat the stain with some hydrogen peroxide from a white towel. You can bleach out the towel later. The white color is to make sure things are working. (Again, hydrogen peroxide has a bleaching effect. Test it out an inconspicuous small part to check if your mattress fabric can be damaged.)

Work your way from the outside going in. The spot will bubble. Keep blotting and applying the hydrogen peroxide until all the blood is removed.

Unknown stains

Use a citrus-based cleaning product and spray the area. Leave it for about 5 minutes.

Use an absorbent cloth to press down on the stain for around 30 seconds without rubbing it. Repeat the process until the stain is clean and smells more of citrus.

You can substitute a dish detergent to do the stain removal. Blot the stain with the detergent, wipe clean with a damp sponge or absorbent cloth until the stain is removed.

Some reminders

Try not to dampen the inside of the mattress while cleaning out the stain. It might cause molds and mildew. You may use a hair dryer to hasten the drying. If it is possible, bring out your damp mattress and let it dry in the sun.

These are some tested methods that had been tried out before. Your success in removing those stains depends on how long it had been there and how extensive the stain is.

Also, these methods are effective mostly for surface stains. If the stain had gone into the mattress padding, it cannot be totally removed.

Another thing to remember: Mattress stains should not cause panic attacks. Panic attacks could be dangerous for you, but it cannot remove stains from mattresses.
