The Comeback Of The Feather Bed

No one has ever slept on clouds. But sleeping on a feather bed somewhat resembles the feeling. Its extremely soft, billowy feel provides comfort and support and sends any person into deep slumber. This is probably why feather bed was such a luxurious item back where it originated in Northern Europe during the middle ages. It wasnÆt the feather bed that we know of today, but a sack of goose feathers and down. It was rather expensive, so the ordinary people content themselves with a sack of hay and straw. Since only the affluent could afford it, the feather bed became a status symbol.

The existence of synthetic fills, however, replaced the feathers and down. Before long, foam and other materials were more commonly used in beds, and feather beds were gradually reduced to a memory of the past, of the time of our great, great grandparents.

But modern people are still strongly attracted to feather beds. For most of them, nothing replaces the level of softness and comfort feather beds give. So in this modern time, when beds have been stuffed with a lot of other materials, feather beds are making a huge comeback.

Like in the old times, feather bed still is filled with feathers and down. But unlike in the old times, feather bed today comes as a mattress topper. It is placed atop a base mattress, which can be futon, sprung, or foam, and serves as a cushion. The softness of the feather bed balances out the firmness of the base mattress, providing superior comfort and support. Its naturally fluffy effect reduces the strains on the pressure points, such as legs, back, and shoulder, and leaves the body relaxed and well rested.

Feather bed is in every way a comfy bedding item. During winter, it keeps the body warm by trapping the body heat. Similarly, it can keep the body cool during summer, as it maintains proper air circulation. Feather beds are specially constructed to keep the feathers evenly distributed and prevent them from compressing in one area. Its tightly woven fabric keeps the dust mites from coming into contact with the body, eliminating the possibility of allergic reactions.

Maintaining and cleaning feather bed is bliss. It only needs to be regularly vacuumed, aired, and brought under the sun. Stains are best managed with a little amount of water.

Today, feather bed is still a luxurious item. Not because it is available only to the wealthy households, but because of its fine quality that provides a sound and restful sleep.
