The Dangers Of Sleeping On A Bad Mattress

Bad mattress means too firm, too old, too soiled, or a combination of all three. On the surface, there seems to be no problem in sleeping on such a mattress. The sad truth, however, is there is. If you have been sleeping on one for the past years, maybe it is time to consider buying a new one or, at the very least, a mattress topper. In this very stressful age, your mattress should provide you the restful sleep you need and not the following:

1. Sleepless nights.
A bad mattress robs you of a good night sleep. When your mattress is not comfortable to sleep on, your tendency is to toss and turn every few minutes. Good, if you get to sleep again, but if you find it hard to go back to sleep, you are likely to spend most of the night staring at the ceiling and counting sheep. When you sleep, your cells replenish, your muscles are put to rest, your brain relaxes, and your body is reenergized. If you donÆt get enough rest, not only will you feel drowsy the whole day, you also get to be irritable and tired, affecting your mood and performance. Worse, you are highly likely to be sickly.

2. Stiff and sore muscles and joints.
A very firm mattress puts too much pressure on the regions of your body that have the most weight concentration, which usually include the back, legs, shoulder, and hips. This happens because there is no even distribution of weight, proper alignment of the spine, and good support. A good mattress is one that is not too firm and alleviates the possibility of waking with an aching body.

3. Allergic reactions.
A mattress that is older than six months old is said to house two million dust mites whose waste droppings turn out to be potent allergens. If that is so, how much more can a decade old, poorly maintained mattress have? Almost 10% of people are allergic to these waste droppings and may have allergic reactions such as runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, asthma attacks, and eczema. The presence of dust mites can also invite bacteria, adding more threats to health.

One of the free luxuries in life is getting a good night rest. Maximize this privilege by getting yourself a good mattress that allows you to sleep deeply, pain-free, and comfortably. In the long run, it is a good investment.
